Croeso i Flwyddyn 2
Welcome to Year 2
Dosbarth Mrs Watkins
GROWING TOPIC APRIL 2021
Da iawn Blwyddyn 2! All your hard work planting has really helped to encourage the bees to visit our school. We now know from our survey this week that we are spotting lots of different species too. I am so proud of you!
Music and Art
Year 2 listened to some classical music and drew pictures to show what the music made them think of. They didn’t know the title at first but drew some amazing pictures which matched the composers ideas!
Flight of the Bumblebee
When Year 2 had finished their pictures they found out the title of this piece of music by Russian composer, Rimsky-Korsakov, was The Flight of the Bumblebee (1900) from the opera, The Tale of Tsar Saltan. Lots of the children had actually drawn bees on their pictures and thought that the violins and flutes really sounded like bees! We thought it was very clever how Rimsky-Korsakov created these pictures in our minds. They also found out that the piece of music is about a prince who disguises himself as a bee so he can visit Tsar Saltan without being seen! In the opera, The Swan-Bird turns the prince into a bee and as he does he speaks these words:
Russian | English translation |
---|---|
(Гвидон спускается с берега в море. Из моря вылетает шмель, кружась около Лебедь-Птицы.) ЛЕБЕДЬ-ПТИЦА: | (Gvidon goes down from the shore into the sea. Out from the sea flies a bumblebee, whirling around the Swan-Bird.) SWAN-BIRD: |
We are very lucky in our class as we have someone who can speak Russian brilliantly! We are super proud of him as he reads the words.🤩
Crazy About Bees!
Year 2 are on a mission to save the bees! We have been learning all about the decline of the bee population and realise how important they are for us and the planet. We wanted to make a difference so we have been doing lots of research to find out how we could help attract the bees to our school grounds. We contacted a bee expert from The National trust who gave us great advice about the plants and seeds we could grow. Thank you very much to parents for kindly supplying plants and seeds for us to grow. It’s so lovely to see the children on a mission to make a real difference to our planet. Take a look at the before and after photos below.

GROWING - our new topic
What a busy start to our new topic - Growing. So far the children have wanted to find out more about plants and teeth! This has lead us to a very interesting science investigation which really made us think about the affect of sugar on our teeth and how important it is to clean them properly. We made posters and our own comics to show what we had learnt.
Year 2 have also been inspired by the growing season, making different blossom artwork for a beautiful class display. They have planted sunflowers and even set up their own garden centre! Take a look at some of the photos of lots of hard work and fun.
Times Tables Fun
We have fun learning our times tables!
We sing them, play bingo and computer games and get active outdoors to help us to learn. We know how important it is to keep learning our 2, 5 and 10 times tables before we go to Year 3!

We had a visit from PC Woodworth who told us about the different roles of the Emergency Services.

We have had a very special visitor!
Christmas Activities
This week we have been engaging with the Five to Thrive resources on the Children in Need website:
https://www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk/schools/primary-school/five-to-thrive-hub/
Today we focused on getting active with Joe Wicks! Year 2 worked in groups, each had a Head Coach who guided their group through workouts devised by Joe. We certainly have some talented coaches and fit children amongst us! Well done Year 2.👍😄
