Easter egg hunt
To end the term the children took part in a fun Easter egg hunt around the school grounds. They followed a map to different clues that gave them the chance to crack a code at the end. Everyone went home with a chocolate egg at the end of the day for their prize! Pasg hapus pawb 🐣
Airbus- Design a new aircraft task
As part of the Taking Action phase of the pupil’s Inquiry Project, Airbus asked the children to design a new style of eco-friendly aircraft. They needed to use the knowledge that they had acquired from their Inquiry Projects to innovate, design and create a prototype and I must say that they all turned out amazingly well!
Easter cards
Year 4 have created the cutest range of Easter cards this year!
‘Come fly with me’ conferences
The children in Key Stage 2 held conferences for each class to attend where they shared information about their lines of inquiry with each other. Every group had their own stall with the posters, presentations and various other leaflets, activities and fun things that they had created! I am so impressed with how confidently they all presented their learning to the other classes. Amazing work, Year 4 😁
March
St David’s Day celebrations
The children in Key stage 2 took part in a variety of performances in a relaxed St David’s Assembly. Year 4 performed ‘Sosban fach’ and sang it so well, da iawn pawb!
Welsh themed art work
The class created some lovely pieces of art work showing some of the Welsh symbols and emblems.
World Book Day 2022
The class had so much fun on World Book day this year and they enjoyed dressing up as their favourite characters! Can you spot anybody that you recognise?
Poetry writing
The children learned about a variety of poetic techniques and used this to write the most incredible poems all about the moon. These poems will be put into a whole school poetry collection which we are looking forward to reading!
Orienteering
In some of our PE lessons this term the class have been learning all about orienteering! They have enjoyed learning how to read the map, locate the tags and collect the symbols in order to crack a code.
February
Research for the Inquiry Project
Year 4 have been working on their own lines of inquiry to find out how the natural world may have inspired humans to explore flight. The research and information that is being talked about in the classroom is very exciting and interesting!
January
Paper throwing investigation
As part of the ‘Finding out’ aspect of their Inquiry Project, Year 4 worked together to plan an investigation linked to flight. They investigated what happens to different shapes of paper when they are thrown through the air. The shapes of paper that the children used were; flat, scrunched into a ball, a paper airplane and a different shape of their choice. The class made some very interesting predictions about how far the paper would travel and what they thought would happen to them. Pupils used their measuring skills very well and the results were really interesting. We actually found out that a piece of paper in the shape of a circle went the furthest! It was great to see how so many of the children worked well as a team to complete this investigation, da iawn Blwyddyn 4!
Drone Workshop
Key Stage 2 were really lucky to have an opportunity to take part in a drone workshop with Jack from Hyett Education. The children listened to a presentation all about forces linked to flight and then they learned how to code a drone and programme it to fly! They had so much fun making the drones fly around the hall, turn in different directions and do flips in the air!
Inquiry Project- Come Fly With Me!
Throughout Key Stage 2 this term, we are introducing and following a new approach to the pupil’s traditional ‘Topic’ lessons. These lessons are being replaced by ‘Inquiry Based Learning’. This is a concept that supports the new Curriculum for Wales 2022 which prepares the children to become ‘lifelong learners’. Our Inquiry Project for this term is linked to the concept of ‘Humans take inspiration from the natural world to meet their needs and wants’ and in class we began to link this to the theme of flight. The children discussed the difference between the human needs and wants, explored and categorised images of natural and man made things related to flight and also spent some time outdoors making observations about the things around us that can fly.
I have been extremely impressed with the children’s initial thoughts and ideas and I am really excited to see where the children’s Inquiry Projects take them!
Virtual Christmas Carol Service
Year 3 and 4 would love to show you their Christmas Carol Service that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home…
Poppy themed calendars
To end to our War and Peace Topic the children created the most stunning paintings showing one of the symbols of remembrance, the poppy. I was blown away by the care and effort that the pupils put into their art work!
Christmas Crackers
The children followed a set of instructions to make their own Christmas cracker for Christmas dinner day. They used a cardboard tube, tissue paper and a snapper, then wrote their own joke and added a sweet treat!
Christmas Tree Decorations
Everyone in Year 4 spent time creating an amazing origami Santa Claus. They had to learn how to fold the paper correctly and needed to use a great deal of patience for their creations. We then had a Tree Decorating Service where each class puts their handmade decorations onto the school Christmas tree and it looked incredibly festive!
A very special thank you to one of our classmates for bringing in a real gas mask and it’s original box that belongs to her Grandparent. The children really enjoyed seeing a real life artefact from the war time and they were full of thoughtful questions about it!
National Takeover Day/Children in Need 2021
Once again, the school had another really successful morning where the Year 6 pupils took on different roles across the school. The Year 6 teachers planned a brilliant day full of Children in Need themed activities for our class and it’s fair to say that everyone had a great time!
Diary Writing
In their English lessons, the class learned about the features needed for writing an effective diary entry. The children then used their knowledge of life in the trenches to write incredible diary entries as though they were on the front line in World War 1. I am so impressed with their writing skills!
Trenches Project
In their Topic work, the class were learning all about what life was like in the trenches for the soldiers in World War 1.
They were horrified to find out about the conditions that the soldiers lived in and that they often shared their trenches with lice and rats! The children also found out how trenches were made and learnt all about the different parts of a trench, such as the barbed wire fences, dugout and duckboard. This lead on to the class designing and making their own model trenches out of clay!
Year 4 then wrote their own scripts and worked hard to record their own mini films showing a war scene in their trench. Throughout the project the children developed so many valuable skills and they were really proud of their work!
September
Where The Poppies Now Grow
In English the children have been studying a poem by Hilary Robinson and Michael Impey and they have really enjoyed reciting and putting actions to the text!
Map work
When the class were talking about what they wanted to learn about during the War and Peace Topic, some of the children wanted to find out how World War 1 started and which countries were involved. The children learnt which countries were allies and then used atlases to locate those countries on a map.
MacMillan Reading Cafe
Year 4 and Year 3 enjoyed sharing a story together with a delicious cake. Thank you very much for your kind donations towards the charity!
War and Peace Topic
Our first Topic of Year 4 was launched with an exciting and fun “recruitment morning”!
Self Portraits
The children have settled into Year 4 well and they created some amazing self portraits out of natural resources. It is so great to see that we have such talented artists in this class!
