We read the book 'We're going on a lion hunt'. We recreated the story in the forest - video clips to follow.
We then retold the story through a barefoot walk through the grass, lake and the swamp. Everyone was brave enough to have a go.
The pictures are below for both activities.

Year One at the Library
Year One are visiting the library in groups on Tuesdays. We have ride on Year 4 swimming bus and then spend time at Connah's Quay library. We read the fiction and non-fiction books and can choose 2 books each to bring back to school to share with our friends. We also get to stamp our books on the way out.
The children have been really excited about the library visit. One child said it was the best trip ever and following our visit another child also went straight back to the library to join! It is lovely to see the children enjoying their books back in class too.
We still have one more group to take and so their photos will be uploaded next week.

We read the Emperor's Egg about the penguin life cycle. We also watched some videos of penguins looking after the eggs, making a huddle and the chicks hatching. On the yard we recreated this. First we had to call for our partner, then the female penguins passed the egg to the male penguins and swam off to sea. The male penguins kept the egg safe and made a huddle to keep warm.

Owl Babies
We read Owl Babies by Martin Waddell in the outdoor classroom. In our groups in the forest we built our owl nest. After that we acted out the story taking it in turns to be Sarah, Percy and Bill as well as the owl mother and owl father. We watched each others performances and Mrs Griffith filmed them too. Some of the videos that were able to be uploaded are below the photo section.
Year One's visit to the Post Office
On Tuesday Year One walked to the Post Office to post letters to our parents. The children were very polite when buying their stamps using their manners and asking for their stamps in Welsh e.g. Ga i stamp. They even helped the post office lady with her reply in Welsh!
The post office assistant showed us her book of stamps, the different sized parcels which she weighed and we had a turn at weighing our letters. We then crossed the road and posted our letters in the post box for collection on Wednesday morning. On our way back to school we saw a postman delivering letters in the village.
The next day back in school we helped Mrs Wilson make a role play post office and we have been writing letters, wrapping parcels and taking it in turns to work in the post office or deliver the letters.
It has been a lovely first week in Year One with our birthday topic. We have designed birthday cards for our friends, made cakes in the dough, read and listened to birthday stories and found out when all of our birthdays are. In our choose time we have explored the new classroom areas such as dough, sand, water, construction, writers corner and the laptops. The children have also used new skills and equipment and have enjoyed making pictures with the Numicon number rods and using the Purple Mash computer programme. A highlight of the week was a visit to the ‘dough disco’ where we exercise our hands and brains before writing by using a pot of playdough, a video clip and some ‘finger gym’.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
