Croeso i Flwyddyn 3!
Summer Term 2023
Rainforest Paintings
We looked at the rainforest art of Henri Rousseau, studied leaves and made lots of different shades of green all to prepare for our own art work. The children have been working hard on their rainforest paintings, slowly building up layers of colour before adding the animal they have been researching. They look very effective!
Trip to Chester Zoo
We’ve had a fantastic trip to Chester Zoo as part of our Rainforests Inquiry Project. We saw lots of tropical animals such as butterflies, frogs, birds and the aye-aye. We were very lucky to see the jaguar too! There was an interesting workshop about rainforests before we had our lunch. It was a lovely hot day so we reapplied sun cream and set off on a long walk, heading for the Monsoon Rainforest via the bat cave. We experienced what the rainforest would be like and saw orangutans, silvery gibbons and a caiman. We also caught a distant glimpse of a tiger! We stopped for a drink and snack break in the shade before continuing our rainforest experience. On the way back to the coach we had time to go through the monkey enclosure. The children’s behaviour was excellent and they all had a wonderful time despite the very hot weather! Well done Year 3!
The Creepy Crawly Show
We’re learning about animals in the rainforest this week so we’ve had some very special visitors in our class today! All the children were very brave when meeting, stroking and even holding some of the animals. We learnt some new facts about rainforest creatures too. What an interesting afternoon!
The Water Cycle
We have been learning about why rainforests are so important as part of our Inquiry Project and have been finding out about the water cycle. There are some new science words for us to understand - evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We have made our own mini water cycles so we can see this process for ourselves.
Inquiry Project
This morning, we had a very informative online workshop from the Eden Project to start our new Inquiry Project. We will be learning about Rainforests this term. We also had a virtual trip to the Amazon and watched some video clips. This all sparked a lot of conversations and ideas about what we’d like to learn and know more about.
Spring Term 2023
Music Lessons
Today, we moved on to composing and performing music 🎶 The children are getting better each week. Well done Year 3!
Eco-homes of the Future
Today, we’ve started making models of our eco-homes. The children are solving problems they encounter and making design decisions. They need to use all of the skills and knowledge they’ve learned during this Inquiry to be successful. So far, they’re doing wonderfully and I’m also very impressed with their co-operation when sharing resources. I can’t wait to see their finished models!
Traditional Welsh Music
We’ve had a visitor in school today playing some traditional Welsh music, teaching clog dancing and telling a Welsh tale. We had a lot of fun!
Dydd Dewi Sant
The Year 3 children have been learning a poem this week to recite in front of Year 4. They tried hard with pronunciation and remembered all of their words - well done everyone! They also had a good time practicing some dawnsio gwerin and different activities about Wales.
Music Lessons
We have been enjoying our specialist teaching from the Theatr Clwyd team over the last few weeks and can’t wait to continue after half term! The children have been learning about beats and phrasing in music through singing and playing the recorder. It can get a little noisy when we’re all working hard!
School Council Elections
We held our School Council elections today. Ten children made a speech or presentation in front of their classmates. They all did a fantastic job and impressed us all with their hard work. They were clear and confident, and made it very hard to choose between them. After everyone cast their votes, the winners were revealed. Congratulations to our two successful candidates!
Homes in the Past
This week, we have been learning about how Iron Age roundhouses were constructed and what they would have looked like inside. The children measured out circles with a diameter of 8m (the average size of a roundhouse) and drew them in chalk on the playground. They then added some of the features they’d learned about such as a fire place, support posts and space for the animals. They were surprised at how spacious the ancient homes were!
Our Homes Research
Everyone in Year 3 did a fantastic job on their research homework - a big thank you to all the adults at home who helped! We have looked at all the information collected and decided to show the results in graph form. The children collected data about rooms in homes in a table in groups, then used this to draw a bar graph. They did so well, as you can see. They also collected data about materials used in homes as a class and used 2Graph on Purple Mash to create their next bar graph. I’m very pleased with such super application of Maths skills!
Village Walk
Today we went for a walk around Northop Hall to research types of homes and other buildings. We were looking for different types and styles of houses, any dates on them, and building materials used. The children took plenty of photos to document their findings.
Welcome back for another busy term in Year 3! We’ve been discussing our resolutions this week and have made some choices about what we’d like to work on improving in school. Our first target is to make sure handwriting is neat and letter formation is correct so we can learn how to join handwriting later in Year 3. The children have practised in some unusual ways today!
