On Wellie Wednesday Year One went on a lion hunt. We had already read the book 'We're going on a lion hunt' by David Axtell and compared it to 'We're going on a bear hunt' by Michael Rosen. We learnt the story using actions to help us remember the text.
"We're going on a lion hunt. We're going to catch a big one. We're not scared, been there before".
As we went on our hunt we encountered the same obstacles as in the story - and "we can't go over them, we can't go under them, we can't go around them - we have to go through them".
We built caves using various equipment and then found a real lion cave at the top of the field.
Following our hunt we took off our wellies and did a barefoot lion hunt. We were very brave and had lots of fun.
Bettter catch a lion tomorrow instead.
As part of our Welsh we watched the 'Fflic a Fflac' programme 'Postio Llythyr' about posting a letter.
We then had some letters from Fflic and Fflac's friends Nic, Jac and Sam so we have written back to tell them about our class. We put our letters in the envelope, wrote the address on the envelope but we did not have a stamp. So we went to the Post Office in the village to buy a stamp and post our letter.
We have a 'Swyddfa'r Post' role play in class and we can use our Welsh to ask for a stamp and an envelope! Ga i stamp? Ga i amlen?
Parents / Guardians - If you would like to follow up from our visit you could show your child any post that comes to your house as we have been talking aboout addresses, post codes and different types of letters. Over half term they could post a letter to themselves or a family member, possibly visit a larger post office or find out what time the post is delivered to their house.
Astronaut Training
Year 1 and 2 spent a day training to be astronauts. They had 5 tasks to complete all of which had to be passed in order to go to space. We went into the hall and watched some video clips of astronauts in space showing us how they went to bed and how they ate. We also learnt some facts about the moon and the planets.
We then had 5 challenges to complete.
Challenge 1 - space station training, including a checklist before take-off!
Challenge 2 - complete a maths pattern challenge.
Challenge 3 - use the laptops to complete NASA kids online level 1 games.
Challenge 4 - label a space shuttle.
Challenge 5 - make a NASA space badge.
All astronauts passed their challenges and received their certificates. They have blasted off and are somewhere in deep space.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
