Plenty of great ideas and a little friendly competition were the order of the day at the Maths Workshop held at school on Thursday. Gareth Metcalfe, a maths expert teacher, who has been working in school with pupils and teachers since September, provided some great practical ideas and games to play with your children as well as providing some theory and background to the importance of helping develop Number Sense for children through visual methods and approaches.
Many of the ideas and resources can be found for free on Gareth's Website 'I See Maths', link below.
Gareth also talked about some research which connects 'finger recognition' to number development. A link to this research and resources to develop these skills in young children is also below.
Finally, Gareth touched on how important it is to consider how we praise our children in their work, focusing on praise for hard work rather than how smart or clever they are.
Further information about this can be found in the Parent/Curriculum/Growth Mindset section of our website.
Thanks to Gareth and to the fantastic turnout of parents at the session.
