Croeso i Flwyddyn 1
Welcome to Year 1
Dosbarth Mrs Mitchell & Mrs Latham
Summer Term 1 - Real Superheroes!
During this half term, we have learnt that not all superheroes wear capes!
Our topic started with a visit from Florence Nightingale. We had lots of questions to ask her and we found out so much information about her life and work. We continued our topic by finding out about other famous nurses from history, including Betsi Cadwaldr and Mary Seacole. We learnt about their beliefs, culture and background. We had lots of fun playing in our role play hospital and cafe and finding the best way to wash our hands. We have also looked at the beautiful art work created by Kyffin Williams and we have created our own fantastic display. We have achieved so much this half term and we hope you enjoy looking at our photographs.
Outdoor Learning - Summer Term 1 2021
Year 1 have had so much fun learning in the outdoor area. We have practiced and developed the skills we have learnt indoors and enjoyed new experiences. Our outdoor learning has included counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, making equal groups and arrays, estimating how long a task takes, sorting objects, observing their environment and sketching, hospital and fruit and vegetable shop role play and having lots of fun with the parachute!
Comic Relief/Red Nose Day 2021
Year 1 have been celebrating Red Nose Day with their superhero friends!
Polar Explorer Challenge!
Year 1 are training to become Polar Explorers. To complete one of the challenges they had to work together as a team. They all did an amazing job!
Colour Melting Ice Experiment
We had an exciting day being scientists! We sprinkled large pieces of ice with salt then added droplets of colour. We observed the ice and noticed that the salt created tunnels by warming up the ice, making it melt. The colour travelled through the tunnels creating a colourful piece of art!
World Book Day
We enjoyed celebrating World Book Day and read the Julia Donaldson ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ book. We had lots of fun taking part in activities - matching rhyming words, measuring and comparing lengths, writing ‘thank you’ cards to the giant, building a town, painting and designing a new tie for the giant! Mrs Mitchell made a surprise virtual visit to share her favourite story with us!
Dathlu Dydd GwÅ·l Dewi - Celebrating St David’s Day
Year 1 had lots of fun celebrating St David’s Day, learning about St David, making daffodils, playing games, building monasteries, listening to Welsh stories and Welsh music.
Welcome Back! 😀
It has been lovely to see the children in Year 1 return to school this week. They have been busy catching up with their friends, playing games on the school field, counting in 2’s, completing outdoor challenges, listening to a story all about ‘The Colour Monster’ and completing activities based on the story.
Monday 22nd February Week 7
Bore Da Dosbarth 1
We hope you have all enjoyed your half-term break and are excited to all be back in school on Wednesday and Thursday with your friends. Mrs Latham and Mrs Hinton are really looking forward to seeing you all again. Don't forget it will be great for you to all be together again but there will be important rules to remember - lots of handwashing, using tissues and trying to keep a safe distance from Mrs Latham and Mrs Hinton. You were all really good at helping to keep each other safe before Christmas so keep up the good work!
Unfortunately, Mrs Mitchell is still shielding, but she has had her first Covid Vaccination and can't wait to see all of you again soon.
This week there is an optional 'Blended Learning' plan for you to do at home on the days you are not in school. The 'key worker' children will be following this plan in school.

Outdoor Learning.
Here are some photos of our Outdoor Learning during this half term. We used the large outdoor area to work with a partner to practise our ‘part whole’ models in maths. We had fun searching for shapes outdoors and playing parachute games. We had so much fun on our ‘Christmas Star Challenge Hunt!’ We had lots of challenges including singing, counting, actions, rolling in leaves, laughing like Santa, hugging trees and telling jokes! We all achieved our challenges and enjoyed a chocolate treat.
This week we have been following the ‘Children in Need - Five to Thrive weekly calendar.’
We have been very active with Joe Wicks and on Friday we joined in with more physical activities and lots of fun Pudsey challenges!
Harvest Celebrations.
The children have enjoyed learning about Harvest time and saying ‘Thank you’ for our Harvest food.
Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
We enjoyed reading the story ‘Have you filled a bucket today?’ by Carol McCloud. We discussed lots of ideas about how we can help ourselves and others to feel happy.
The story made us think about the importance of giving, sharing and caring. We created a class display of all our hard work!
Wonderful Woodland!
We started our topic – ‘Wonderful Woodland’ and thought about what we would like to learn. We came up with lots of interesting questions that we would like to find the answers to and look forward to continuing with this after half-term.
The Gruffalo
We’ve really enjoyed re-telling the story of the Gruffalo following the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach.
We explored the forest with a partner and thought about where woodland animals might live. We then used our geography skills to draw and label a map of the forest.
Gruffalo Hunt
We had a surprise delivery! A letter from mouse, asking for our help! The Gruffalo was missing and had been spotted in Northop Hall! As quickly as we could, we got on our coats and went out hunting for clues around school and in the forest. We found lots of clues but unfortunately, we did not find the Gruffalo! We decided we should record the story of our Gruffalo hunt. We worked together to create a class story map then we used the story map to help us write about our hunt in our books.
We were pleased to receive an email from mouse at the end of the day to say the Gruffalo had returned home safe with lots of stories to tell the woodland animals about his adventures at Northop Hall School!
PE
Year 1 have been busy developing their ball skills and having fun working together as a team, listening, following instructions and taking turns.
Independent Activities
We have been enjoying our independent learning activities too!
Mrs Mitchell, Mrs Hinton and I are so delighted with how quickly the children have settled into their first week. It is great to see how independent they are already, especially when saying goodbye to you at the gate and walking into school. Thank you for your support.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
