Croeso i Fflwyddyn 3 Welcome to Year 3!
Our Class Assembly
The children have been researching different leaders of their choice as part of our Inquiry Project. They created a slide each on a PowerPoint to present to the parents in a class assembly. It was lovely to see so many parents and family members! The children were all amazing - they did a great job of presenting their information to an audience. I am exceptionally proud of them!
Sports Day
We had glorious sunshine for our first sports day with an audience. The children chose their races - sprint, bean bag shuttle, horse race, relay and the lap. Despite a few nerves, all of the children raced wonderfully and showed impressive sportsmanship. I’m always proud of these children and they truly showed what they are made of with their perseverance, supportiveness and amazing team spirit. Well done Year 3!
Jubilee Celebrations
Our celebrations began in the morning with ‘Northop Hall’s Got Talent’. Our 3 acts performed amazingly! We had a special lunch with a Royal guest before afternoon Jubilee activities. Year 3 took responsibility for running the snakes and ladders game then organised and served ice creams for all the school. We had a fun filled day!
Treasure Hunt
In our English lessons we are reading ‘The Queen’s Nose’ by Dick King-Smith. The main character, Harmony, has a treasure hunt set by her uncle so we decided to learn about how to write good cryptic clues and make our own! The children wrote and hid clues and a prize for the ‘treasure’.
Replies to Letters
As part of our last Inquiry Project, the children all researched experts in their particular inquiry area e.g. helicopters, drones. They wrote letters to these experts asking for further information. We were very excited to see that two groups have had replies! A big thank you goes out to the author Andy Shepherd, who answered questions about dragons, and Airbus based at Oxfordshire Airport, who answered questions about helicopters. The groups loved reading the responses and were very appreciative of the personal gifts sent too. Hopefully the other groups will receive replies soon.
Update: a third group has now received a reply from the World Museum in Liverpool!
Easter Egg Hunt
This afternoon, the children have taken part in an Easter egg hunt. They had to use a map to find the clues and record which chocolate bar was in which location. All the children have a chocolate egg as a prize. Have a wonderful Easter everyone!
‘Come Fly With Me’ Conference
This morning, the Year 3 children presented everything they have been learning about in our inquiry project at a KS2 conference. Each group had a stall and presented to Years 4, 5 and 6 separately. They all did wonderfully and spoke with confidence about their learning. They had made posters or PowerPoint presentations, along with some additional leaflets and activities for the other children to do. I am very proud of all the Year 3 children - well done!
Kites
Year 3 have been working hard this term on researching, planning and making kites. This week, we finally had the right weather conditions to try to fly them! As all good designers do, the children have already started to think about what they could do to improve their kites if they made them again.
Maths
The children have been learning how to make and read information presented as a pictogram. I challenged them to collect data in a tally chart then collate their findings as a class. Next they made a pictogram of their data in groups, deciding on how many items should be represented by a stick. All of the children decided that using 1 stick to represent 10 items was most appropriate.
Come Fly With Me
We started a new Inquiry unit this week - “ Humans take inspiration from the natural world to meet their needs and wants” - and we’ve started to find out about flight. The children categorised pictures of natural and man made flying things and started to think about how they were linked. They have also played with some flying toys to think about why and how they fly. Finally, we have conducted a 20 minute survey about flying things in the skies around our school. The children were surprised at just how many birds and aeroplanes we counted!
Virtual Christmas Carol Service
Year 3 and 4 would love to show you their Christmas Carol Service that you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home.
Trenches Videos
The children in Year 3 would like to present their videos. All trench models, scripts and filming were done by the children themselves. They have learnt a lot and enjoyed the project.
Trenches Project
Year 3 have been working hard on their trenches project this half term. They have gathered information from different sources about what life was like in the World War One trenches, and what trenches looked like. They have designed and made clay trenches. It was a lot of fun, very messy, and a wonderful way to present all they have learned. Da iawn Blwyddyn 3!
Where The Poppies Now Grow
We have been working with the book ‘Where The Poppies Now Grow’ by Hilary Robinson and Michael Impey in our English lessons this half term. The children have learned the book very well! Enjoy the video below of them reciting it.
War and Peace Topic
The children wanted to know which countries fought in different wars so we’ve been learning about the countries involved in WWI. We played a memory game and used this to sort countries into the sides they fought on. The next step was to find these countries on a map. We worked together to locate them on an online map of the world then the children found the same countries using an atlas and recorded them on their own maps. They worked very hard!
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
