End of Year Letter from Miss Bellis
Dear parents and carers,
I wanted to begin by thanking you all for your support across this strange year! Another big thank you for the kind cards and gifts that I received, they were so thoughtful and will be very much enjoyed.
It has been a real delight teaching your children in year 5, they really are a credit to you all. I am so excited to take them through to year 6, I just know that they are going to have a fantastic year and will be fully prepared for the next step of their journey in high school.
I will be setting 6 online lessons and corresponding homework on MyMaths website for your child to work on at their own leisure during the summer holidays if they would like to. If you have any issues with lost log in details for MyMaths then please contact me via Purplemash or my Hwb email address bellisc9@hwbcymru.net and I will endeavour to help as soon as I can.
I am very much looking forward to September and welcoming all pupils back to school. I really hope that you enjoy your summer break.
Kind regards,
Miss C Bellis
Back to school!
We have been having a great time back in school and it has been so lovely to spend time with some pupils who have returned.
This week, both at home and in school, we are researching and creating art and maths inspired by the famous artist Piet Mondrian.
Below are some pictures of Monday's group creations. The group created their Mondrian inspired masterpieces using; masking tape, chalks and ruler to measure out. They then calculated the perimeter and area of their squares. Perhaps you could try this at home too?
Week 5 Tasks (1/6/20)
Thank you!
For the amazing video that Year 5 pupils made. It has been so lovely to see your faces
Diolch yn fawr iawn,

Latest Email To Parents
Below is a copy of the email which I have sent out to parents this week.
Good morning,
I hope that you all enjoyed the Easter break as best as you could! I am so glad that we had some lovely weather for it.
I just wanted to inform you all of the latest plans for 'learning from home'. This week, I have emailed your children via Purplemash and I have set a few 2Dos on there for them to work through at their own pace this week. These are:
1. Fraction wall game
2. Multiplication game
3. Persuasive text writing- design a futuristic invention.
4. Grammar work (nouns, verbs, adjectives sort) This is just to recap and consolidate.
It would be great if they could be encouraged to keep emailing me as much as possible too, using 2Email.
I am currently working on planning and setting some other online work for the pupils, using Google Classroom. I am meeting virtually with other members of KS2 this week to work together to plan and post this work online. Google Classroom is new to us, therefore we need to ensure that it will run as smoothly as possible for you and your children to access! I am aiming to post the planning and home learning next Monday, so that they have a full week to work through each weeks plan.
We will send information of how to log into and access the Google Classroom work ready for Monday.
I hope that you have a good week, enjoy the sunshine and keep safe.
Kind regards
Miss Bellis
School Closure Info
I hope that you are all keeping safe and well and make the most of your time at home. I know that you will be all be working through your learning packs that you were given last week, however I just wanted to remind you that you can access lots of apps to support your learning via Purplemash (you have had your log ins for this.)
I have been sending out emails using the 2email app on Purplemash which have updated you all with ideas and information. It has been great to hear from some of you!
I have created a new ‘display board’ on Purplemash called ‘year 5 school closure board’, this is a place that you can share your work with us.
more updates soon, keep checking Purplemash.

Tutankhamun’s New Tunic!
To link to our current ancient Egyptians topic, year 5 have been set the task to investigate the best, stretchiest material for a new tunic for a museum Tutankhamun impersonator. The children planned their investigation, considering the variables and how to make it a fair test. They will record their findings, evaluate them, use line graphs and write replies to our museum worker 👍🏻
STEM Bridge Building Competition 2020!
Ms Dale has again hosted the bridge building sessions as part of her STEM work in our school. Year 5 have attended sessions to design and build a bridge which had to adhere to a certain criteria. The longest bridges have been calculated.....the results are in! Da iawn to our top 3 in both criteria and many thanks to Ms Dale for another fantastic experience.
Egyptian History Day
Egyptian day is well underway and the children are learning so much about the ancient Egyptians through the wonderful activities and artefacts provided by Tony Cope.
We can’t wait to learn even more about the Egyptians throughout the rest of the term!
Division
I have been blown away today by year five’s first lesson on division, as part of Maths No Problem.
We began the unit with a word problem and resources to solve the division, already lots of the children are making links to their previous multiplication learning to solve division problems. It would be great if you could continue to practice times tables at home to support with your children’s success in maths.
Nadolig Llawen!
I hope that you all have a lovely Christmas and a happy new year. Thank you so much for all of the kind gifts, I will enjoy them very much over the break!
Here are some pictures from this morning’s Santa dash for you to enjoy.
Christmas Party Day
We are getting into the Christmas spirit in Year 5, today we had a visit from the big man himself! We also played party games in class before we hit the disco for an afternoon of dancing.....phew!
Christmas Tree Decorating Assembly
Some pictures from a magical assembly. This year year 5 went eco with their decorations and even collected their own sticks!
Christmas Fair Success!
Thank you for all of your support buying our homemade pasta trees this year. Thanks to everyone who bought a tree, we have made £65.50 for our class fund. The children have decided to spend the money on: new whiteboard pens and lots of games for their wet play box!
We hope that you enjoy your trees over Christmas!
Christmas Fair Preparation!
This week Year 5 have been busy making, costing and working out potential profit to raise from the sale of our eco friendly pasta shell Christmas tree table decorations! We are very proud of our creations and we hope to sell every one of them at our class stall this coming Thursday 28th November. You will find us in the Year 5 classroom, see you there!
Dwr Cymru Visit
This week we had a visit from Dwr Cymru, the children had to become engineers and build a successful network of pipes to deliver a fresh water supply around a community of homes and businesses. Year 5 work in teams to connect the system within a budget of £50,000!
ICE Bridge Building Experience
Today we have been very lucky to experience an exciting morning of being bridge engineers! Along with 5 STEM ambassadors (all of which engineering professionals) year 5 managed to build an 11 metre suspension bridge by using team work and problem solving skills. Many of the children feel so inspired by the experience that they are hoping to be engineers themselves one day! Da iawn pawb!
Place Value Fun!
Today we practiced our understanding of place value using 4 digit numbers by playing an exciting game! The game involves ones, tens, hundreds and thousands counters placed inside an envelope. Children take to turns to pull out 10 counters without looking, they record their number and whoever makes the highest numbers in each round gets a point!
A great way to practice reading and writing 4 digit numbers.
Totality
This morning the children used their problem solving skills in maths to play and adapt the Nrich game ‘Totality’. They really enjoyed thinking of their own rules to make the game more or less challenging. They used their addition, subtraction and multiplication skills all in one lesson!
To find this game at home visit www.nrich.maths.org/1216
New Topic Immersion Day
As I am sure you have all heard, this week we held an immersion day into our new topic ‘Dwr’. The children had the chance to explore water in lots of different ways and come up with questions about water organically.
We had some excellent questions to further investigate during our topic this term, it is great to see the children so enthusiastic to lead their own learning! Here’s to an exciting new topic ahead.
