What a great day we all had for Sport Relief, raising almost £180 which we have already donated to the charity this afternoon.
Children from Year 1 - Year 6 were organised into mixed age groups and took part in activities including dance, cricket, tag rugby, netball and other sporting games. The oldest children in each group helped organise and were very encouraging and supportive to the younger members of the group.
The children in the Early Years took part in activities in their own area.
Thank you for your donations and well done to all of the children who made this morning such fun and a such a special event.
Today was the first ever Reading Cafe event in school and what a success it was! Mrs Watkins organised the event for Foundation Phase parents, grandparents or other carers and family members to come to school to read and share stories with their children in a relaxed atmosphere, whilst having a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.
The event was very well attended and proved to be so popular that we will surely do this again and extend it to the KS2 children in future.
Comments from our visitors afterwards included:
'Lovely idea-so nice to see the children enjoying their reading. well organised - a lovely school.'
'A fantastic morning, was lovely listening to my little boy read in such a relaxed and fun environment.'
'Lovely to spend time with my daughter in school, she was really excited to have me in to see her and hear her read.'
'What a great morning. We are keen readers anyway but I'm always thrilled to have another opportunity to listen to my child read. Well done for promoting this event.'
'A special occasion and tea, coffee and biscuits also helped!'
Thank you to everyone who attended and look out for news of future Reading Cafe events.
After a one week delay, World Book day finally arrived in Northop Hall! With a whole school book theme of The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt & Oliver Jeffers we were inundated with Crayons of many colours all through the school.
Activities included letter writing, persuasive posters and large collage drawing amongst many others. Even the Year 6 children learned to empathise with the different colour crayons and consider their woes!
Thank you to all the teachers who organised some great activities and to the brightly coloured 'crayons' we had in school today.
We had a fantastic celebration on St David's day this year with a full range of activities and an Assembly where each class shared some songs, poems and artwork for an audience of Parents, Pupils and Governors.
Some Parents comments include:
'Da iawn Ysgol Northop Hall am gwasanaeth Dydd Gwyl Dewi gwych!'
'Lovely to see so many happy children enjoying the celebrations. well done.'
Thank you for a lovely Assembly. You should be very proud of your Welsh Singing and poetry. Da iawn.'
Over the past year Miss Bellis has been working with all the Staff and pupils in the school to develop science teaching and learning as part of the Primary Science Quality Mark. I am pleased to announce that as a school we have been now been awarded the Bronze award, the first step on the ladder to achieving Silver and then Gold in the future!
The award is based on a set of criteria and evidence collected, which reflects the continued development of Science learning taking place in and around school. We have worked closely with Hawarden High, Ms Dale (STEM ambassador), BBC Terrific Scientific and hosted Science days along with many other outside agencies which have contributed to the learning of all of our pupils at Northop Hall. Miss Bellis, Mrs Harrison and some Governors have observed Science learning taking place across the school and gathered pupil’s thoughts and ideas about their own science learning, all of which has been extremely beneficial to ensure the further development of children’s knowledge of: scientific enquiry, knowledge and understanding of the world around them and leading their own learning in science.
We look forward to our next Science day taking place on 15th March, where we will be exploring 'big questions' through child-centred investigations. We will enjoy continuing to work towards the next award and all of the hands on learning which will build towards achieving it.
We have today been informed that a small number of children in school have been diagnosed with confirmed scarlet fever. We have been provided with advice from Public Health Wales which follows below.
Although scarlet fever, sometimes known as scarlatina, is usually a mild illness, it should be treated with antibiotics to reduce the risk of complications and spread to others.
The symptoms of scarlet fever may include a sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting. This is followed by a fine red rash, which typically first appears on the chest and stomach, rapidly spreading to other parts of the body. On more darkly pigmented skin, the scarlet rash may be harder to spot, but it should feel like 'sandpaper'. The face can be flushed red but pale around the mouth and a strawberry red or swollen tongue.
If you think you, or your child, have scarlet fever:
· See your GP or contact NHS Direct 0845 46 47 as soon as possible
· Make sure that you/your child takes the full course of any antibiotics prescribed by the doctor.
· Stay at home, away from nursery, school or work for at least 24 hours after starting the antibiotic treatment, to avoid spreading the infection.
· Good hand hygiene and avoiding the spread of respiratory secretions (as per flu - “catch it, bin it, kill it”) can help to prevent the spread of infection.
Treatment is straightforward and usually involves a course of penicillin antibiotics.
Complications: Children who have had chickenpox recently are more likely to develop more serious infection during an outbreak of scarlet fever and so parents should remain vigilant for symptoms such as a persistent high fever, cellulitis (skin infection) and arthritis (joint pain and swelling).
If you are concerned for any reason please seek medical help immediately. If your child has an underlying condition which affects their immune system, you should contact your GP or hospital doctor to discuss whether any additional measures are needed.

Should your child be diagnosed with Scarlet Fever by a doctor, please inform the school as soon as possible.
We wanted to let you know we will now be holding our World Book Day on Friday 9th March, same arrangements as originally planned, working on the book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’.
The launch of our Reading Café for FP will continue as planned on that day too and will have an extra special feel to it, with it also being our World Book Day. We hope as many of you as possible will be able to attend this too. Please refer to previous communication to FP Parents & Carers from Mrs Watkins about this.
Having carefully considered the current weather situation with overnight snowfall, freezing, windy conditions and a high probability of a further decline during Friday, we have decided to close the school on the grounds of health and safety of children on site and national travel warnings. We have a number of staff living in areas further afield and so pupil-staff ratios cannot be guaranteed either.
We hope you understand the decision we have taken and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday.
