Online safety top tips for primary aged learners
The internet is a great place to help you stay in touch with your friends and family, to do your school work and to watch videos or play games. However, it’s very important to follow these tips to help keep you safe. If you have any problems, or you are worried remember you can always talk to a parent or carer, or a grown up you trust.
Are you or your family budding online game makers? Do you enjoy Minecraft or playing computer games? Well now is the chance to have a go at making one of your own to enter a Purple Mash competition.
The Purple Mash Games Design Competition has three categories for competition entries:
1. Family Category – you working with your brothers or sisters/parents/other household members
2. Individual Child - just you
3. School Group - for children of essential workers who are making theirs in school.
• If you click on the Games Design Competition section of the Featured feed on the right hand side of the Purple Mash Homepage, you will find a range of help files, videos and other tools including how you can add your self-composed sounds, music and your own artwork.
• When you open the 2DIY3D app, choose My Game (rather than My Simple Game) so you can add more complex detail, including multiple levels. You can’t change from My Simple Game to the more detailed one later in the process.
• The closing date for the competition is 26th June. This will give you time to start planning your game before moving onto the exciting part, the building of the game! You’ll need to trial it, modify and improve it and check all the spellings are sorted so you are sure it is ready to share on the Purple Mash Display Board.
• You can save and edit work as often as you like before submitting – it should only be submitted once it is completely finished.
• You submit your work by sharing it to the correct Display Board for the category they are entering. There are instructions in the attached document to help you learn about submitting to Display Boards.
• The Display Boards will be visible to the wider public, so it’s important not to include any personal information in your entries. Don’t use names or other personal information as part of the designs, titles or instructions. Any submissions that include personal information won’t be accepted or displayed on the board. The only information visible on the board will be the school name.
• Your work will not become visible until it has been approved by the Purple Mash team (We won’t be seeing them unless they get approved). Depending on the number of submissions Purple Mash receive, this may take some time, but they will work through them as quickly as possible.
We won’t be setting this up as a 2Do so you will need to go to the competition icon or directly to the App, found from the Home Page – Computing – 2DIY3D.
There are already some entries on the Competition Display Boards so you could see what others are doing too.
We hope you take part in this competition, either on your own or as a family project. Maybe it could be a Half Term project when we won’t be setting you work to do or you do it as part of your work. We look forward to playing your completed games.
Good luck!
We have had 40 peg dolls completed and returned to school. It is so good to see your different designs. We have spider man, princesses, swimmers, footballers and many more....they are all fantastic. Please can whoever made "Harry Potter" email me with your name as I couldn't spot a name on this magical creation!
Opening your sealed envelopes or bags and looking at your designs has made my day brighter. Thank you for all of your efforts and please keep them coming!
The Book of Hopes
Michael Morpurgo is just one of more than 100 people who have contributed to an amazing new book, The Book of Hopes which he hopes will lift people's spirits during the lockdown. Children's author Katherine Rundell came up with the idea for the book to inspire children during the coronavirus pandemic. The contributions can be read and seen for free on the National Literacy Trust's website. It's hoped it will be eventually published to raise money for NHS charities.
Completely free for all children and families, the extraordinary collection of short stories, poems, essays and pictures has contributions from more than 110 children’s writers and illustrators, including Lauren Child, Anthony Horowitz, Greg James and Chris Smith, Michael Morpurgo, Liz Pichon, Axel Scheffler, Francesca Simon and Jacqueline Wilson.
The collection, published by Bloomsbury, is dedicated to the doctors, nurses, carers, porters, cleaners and everyone currently working in hospitals.
The Book of Hopes is currently available to read online only. Bloomsbury intends to publish a gift book based on the project in the autumn in support of NHS Charities Together. Please visit @KidsBloomsbury for further updates on this.
There are some incredible pieces of writing for you to read with or to your children. Enjoy!

After many different announcements by different governments and the media reporting over the last few days, we would like to help explain and ease your mind over the situation regarding the re opening of schools in Wales, as mentioned in the whole school email sent by Mrs Harrison yesterday.
Education is a devolved aspect of Government and although the Prime Minister spoke last night about a potential re opening of schools in England on June 1st, here in Wales that date has clearly been ruled out by Kirsty Williams, the Education Minister for the Welsh Government.
Kirsty Williams:
"The current situation for schools in Wales will not change on 1st June."
"As I have said before, you will always hear directly from me on the decisions we make in Wales for our pupils, parents and school staff."
"You have my guarantee that we will give everyone time to plan ahead of a next phase starting.Any decision to increase the operation of schools will be communicated well in advance."
"We are working closely with local authorities to ensure that schools are supported in this preparation work. In the meantime, critical workers and those who need to use schools or hubs for your children should continue do so."
"We will continue to be guided by the very latest scientific advice and will only look to have more pupils and staff in schools when it is safe to do so. We will, of course, need to ensure that social distancing requirements can be adhered to."
